The bodies of the four fallen servicemen were flown into RAF Lyneham today and later passed through the market town of Wootton Bassett. More than 2,000 people, including family, friends, townspeople and others stood in silent respect as the four hearses paused briefly at the war memorial.

This report from Steve Blundell - RBL Riders

Today’s sunny day was broken at 1430 as the four people being repatriated came through Wootton Bassett. 39 standards were flown from various regiments and associations. 41 motorbikes were there, 34 of them being from the Riders Branch, along with one trike and one scooter. We had over 45 members there and 8 fellow bikers standing along with us. All of the repatriated were supported by a large turnout of their families, friends and regimental/service personnel. Attendance today was very large, especially from our Branch. It was good to see many new faces among the old regulars. Well done to you all. Thanks were expressed to the Branch from all four families for our attendance. Again, thanks to all of you who turned up (or tried to do so).

Gable Cross Police Station - On the A420 just east of the junction with the A419 (1450)

This report from Pat Bristow, RMA

Three standards were paraded: RMA Swindon, RE Swindon and Lyneham Old Boys

15 veterans attended, along with about 150 police officers and 50 members of the public.

At the Road Bridge - over the A420 between Shrivenham and Highworth (1505)

This report from Derrick Jeans, RAFA

At the bridge over the A420, 12 people were joined by Cllr E. Ware. All approaching traffic halted at this point as the cortege passed.

United Kingdom DefenceAcademy- at the Watchfield Roundabout on the A420, adjacent to the UKDA. (1510)

A bright and sunny but rather cold day saw the gathering of those attending the road lining to honour the four repatriated servicemen.

Two standards were present: RMA Poole and District and RMA Guildford

There were 14 RM veterans present, along with a Canal Zone (Royal Berkshire Regiment), an RAF and a Royal Artillery veteran. Uniformed personnel, including a Commander and Lt Commander RN, 4 Wing Commanders and a Squadron Leader RAF Regiment, an RAF Flt Lieutenant and Sergeant, and 5 army officers. There were also about 20 academy staff and members of the public, including a member of the Salvation Army.

The salute to the cortege was ordered by WO1 John Houghton, RAF Regiment.

As usual, the MOD Police provided two officers for traffic control. Many thanks also to the College Farm pub, who again provided soup, sandwiches and hot drinks after the event, free of charge.

Folly Hill Layby - east of Faringdon on the A420, just north of the A417 junction

This report by Joy Blake

Over 80 people joined in with the Faringdon Branch members of the Royal British Legion at the Folly Hill Lay-by, for the repatriation cortege, which passed us by at 3.20 pm. The community police were on hand again with traffic control and hot drinks.

There were many veterans wearing berets and medals, together with townspeople, members of the RBL from adjoining towns, the chairman of the Vale of the White Horse District Council, Mrs Alison Rooke, the Faringdon town mayor, Dr Mike Wise and chairman of the Vale Branches of RBL, Mr David Drew.

Several people parked and got out of their cars and joined us.

Standards were as follows: Union Flag, RBL Faringdon, Beedon, Shrivenham and Wantage, the Wantage RN Veterans Association and the Oxfordshire Womens Section of the RBL.

John RadcliffeHospital- near St Anthony Padua Parish Church, Headley Way.

This report from John Walker RDG:

There were 65 veterans in berets and 49 others from all three services. A massive turnout from the Oxford public (not forgetting the famous cake lady, Diana). At the final turn they were two deep (about 200) and many more at the bottom of the hill and all the way up to us. It was quite the largest crowd to date, by far.

Royal British Legion standards displayed were OxfordCity, Henley, Chalgrove, Kidlington, Wheatley, Marston, Islipnd Littlemore.

Association standards paraded were: RAF Regiment; Royal Marines Bicester, Hazelmere and Windsor, Coldstream Guards, Canal Zone (Oxon), Royal Tank Regiment (Oxon), RAF PTI, St George Society and the Royal Dragoon Guards Banner.

Also with us were the Lord Mayor, Mary Clarkson, and Supt Andy Murray (Thames Valley Police) with his full crew of police officers. We do also have now and did last week a crew from St Johns Ambulance looking after us (very reassuring). The weather was fine and dry at 80C. The cortege passed us at 1605.

Sadly as we all left, we heard we will be doing this again next week.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
