REPATRIATION REPORT Friday 05 February, 2010
From operations in Afghanistan, the repatriation of:
Corporal Liam Riley (21), 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment Lance Corporal Graham Shaw (27), 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment These NCOs, whose battalion is part of the Coldstream Guards Battle Group, were killed by two separate IEDs on 1st February, while on foot patrols near Malgir, south of Kings Hill Check Point in the Central Helmand Province. Service veterans and members of the public turned out in the following “stations of vigil” to pay their respects to the fallen as the cortege made its way on the 40 mile route from the point of arrival at RAF Lyneham to the John Radcliffe Hospital at Oxford.

Many thanks to all those who attended today’s repatriation. A good number of us were there- 28 members along with two family members, plus 24 RBL Bikers. 22 Forces Associations standards were presented. Family and friends of the deceased, with a large number of their regiment and its CO turned out. All thanked us for our continued attendance.

Three standards were present: Royal Marines Association - Swindon Royal Engineers Association - Swindon RAF Lyneham Old Boys 8 veterans attended, with about 40 members of the public, 100 police officers and a Fire Service representative.
At the Road Bridge - over the A420 between South Marston and Bourton. (A correction on previous reports: this is a road bridge, not a railway bridge. Just goes to prove the old military adage; time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted!)

At the bridge, five people were present, and we were joined by three passing motorists, who left their cars while other motorists stopped at the side of the road as the cortege passed.
United Kingdom Defence Academy - at the Watchfield Roundabout on the A420, adjacent to the UKDA.
Two Royal Marines Association were present: RMA - Poole & District RMA - Guildford Plus 14 RMA veterans and veteran representatives of the Royal Artillery, RAOC Para, Korean War, Canal Zone and the Berkshire Regiment. Uniformed serving personnel included 5 RAF officers, a Major RMP, WO2 REME and the Royal Fusiliers. About 40 members of the public also attended. The salute to the cortege, which passed at 1430, was ordered by WO1 Stu Simpson RRS, the Academy RSM.
Once again thanks to Owen, Jinney and staff at the College Farm for their hospitality before and after the ‘Vigil Parade’ and also thanks to the MOD Police, who provided traffic control.
Folly Hill Layby - east of Faringdon on the A420, just north of the A417 junction

Today in brilliant sunshine, we had just over 75 people present attending the Folly Hill Layby. Only the sadness of why we were meeting changed our sunny smiles to faces of sadness and respect.
The cortege passed us at 1445. The community police from Wantage were on hand once again with hot drinks and people attended from local villages as well as Bampton, Harwell, Newbury, Wantage and Abingdon.
The Chairman of the Vale DC (Cllr Alison Rooke) attended, as did members of the local town council and many veterans. Also attending for the first time was an 86 year old lady, who had been an ambulance driver in WW2, who felt privileged to show homage to the soldiers returning from Afghanistan.

70 veterans in berets and 35 others from all three services. The normal large crowd of the Oxford public (150) at the top end of the hill, with many more on the hill leading up to us. The Thames Valley police were there doing their normal duties as always and supplying the veterans with hot tea/coffee and soup. Our famous cake ladies brought in their fruit cakes and fresh bread for the hot soup. The Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Mary Clarkson was in attendance.
There were eight Royal British Legion standards present: RBL Henley RBL Chalgrove RBL Islip RBL Wheatley RBL Kidlington RBL Marston RBL Headlington RBL Oxford County There were also 5 Association standards: Royal Marines Association Bicester Coldstream Guards Association Oxford Royal Navy Association Oxford Canal Zone Veterans Oxford Royal Society of St George, Oxford National Banner of the Royal Dragoon Guards Association.
